Monday, 12 September 2011

Rajeev Gopalakrishnan has become the new Managing Director of Bata India. He will take over from  Marcelo Villagran, who has been promoted as Group Managing Director to look after the business in emerging markets. Gopalakrishnan has been the MD of Bata Thailand and Bata Bangladesh. Joining Bata Bangladesh in January 2010, he undertook an aggressive program of market expansion, manufacturing modernization, appropriate shoe line building for different customer segments and an extensive people development program. Bata is playing a pivotal role in developing the leather industry of Bangladesh.

Gopalakrishnan has worked with Bata India for 16 years. He has been working with Villagran for the past seven months to ensure continuity and smooth transition for achieving the business plans of Bata India as well as that of Bata Shoe Organization (BSO). The Batanagar factory in West Bengal is the first Indian shoe manufacturing unit to receive the ISO 9001 certification in 1993. Over the past few years, Bata India has shut down unviable stores, aggressively expanded store network, opened large-format stores and revamped older stores. It is trying to break out of the value mould into the higher-margin premium footwear segment.
