Chennai’s fourth Big Bazaar and the biggest in the city opened at Express Avenue. Its spread across 70,000 sq. ft. in which about 2,000 sq. ft. is dedicated to a live kitchen and a ready-to-eat section selling savories, sweets and baked goods. Other categories of goods sold in the store include apparels, a variety of household items, luggage and electronics. There are 26 check-out counters as well as six express counters.

The Future Group which runs the Big Bazaar chain plans to invest Rs 600 crores over 18 months to open 60-odd Big Bazaar stores with a floor space between 40,000 and 60,000 sq. ft., including stores as well as back-end infrastructure. The funds would be raised through warrants and QIPs.  Funding for the expansion will be done mostly through internal accruals.

Moreover, Big Bazaar would focus more on apparel which it feels has a great potential. With this launch, there are now 132 Big Bazaar outlets across the country. Another 10 to 12 will open in the next two months. Besides Chennai, Coimbatore is the only other city in Tamil Nadu to have a Big Bazaar store. Other Big Bazaar stores in Tamil Nadu cities are in various stages of development.
