Thanks to pop divas like Katy Perry, Rihanna and Lady Gaga and other international A list celeb clients, fashion designer Manish Arora is the hottest and much envied Indian designer of the season. It is no surprise that with his growing international appeal, Arora is not frequently seen on Indian fashion ramps. Slightly indignant at the hint that after setting up his store abroad, Arora may be erasing his Indian entity, the designer reaffirmed that he is still very much in touch with his Indian roots. According to Arora his focus is on Manish Arora the brand and not the designer. “I am not deliberately trying to move abroad. I have just been fortunate to have had the opportunities that have brought me to this stage of my career, which is just the beginning. I have so much more that I would like to achieve. Having said that, I have never denied my roots nor have I tried to disconnect from them. I am very proud of being an Indian and Delhi is and will always be my home.” Another controversy he hopes to clear is about his quirky designs. He says his clothes are generally slotted in the ‘quirky category’ but his designs are anything but that.

Having sorted out the controversy of estrangement with his roots, Arora added that his business commitment elsewhere was the only reason for him not showcasing at the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in Delhi. He has always had a stall at Delhi’s fashion week. He stopped showcasing after SS ’09 because the timing between Paris Fashion Week and Delhi’s fashion week is too short. Stalls are where the business takes place. Moreover, it would not do justice to show the same collection twice in one season. What matters eventually is if the product sells and the fact that he does not showcase anymore has not affected his sales in anyway.
