Sabyasachi: Balancing between designing, business

Friday, 20 January 2012

Well-known fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who started his label Sabyasachi in 2002 has clocked in revenues of above Rs 52 crores in 2011. The Kolkata-based designer had started his business with a Rs 20,000 loan from his sister and today it has grown into a fashion hub employing over 600 craftsmen, 32 assistants, including one from Harvard,.

He gives credit for his success to his skills of being a powerful and influential commercial designer. He is proud to be an Indian and is upset with the fact that Indian consumers run after foreign brands instead of believing in the creativity and richness of our own native handmade traditional wear.

He loves the myriad weaves offered by states of Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Bengal, and the south. And when it comes to his own creations, they are adorned by some big names from Bollywood, art and music, such as Vidya Balan, Rani Mukerji, Frida Kahlo, Mira Nair, Deepti Naval, Mallika Sarabhai, the dancer Shobana, Sonal Mansingh, Rekha, Gulzar and Usha Uthup among others. He takes pride in providing livelihood to his artisans through his business venture. Moving ahead, he plans to hire a designer to take over his role to pursue his passion for designing anything… from hotels, public spaces; to making movies; music and art projects.
