Kolkata’s has got its fourth Spencer’s Retail hypermarket at Axis Mall, Rajarhat town. It offers a range of products ranging from food, vegetables, fruits, cosmetics, garments to electrical equipments. While the project site at Rajarhat is thinly populated unlike areas like south Kolkata, Vice Chairman of RPG, Sanjiv Goenka says the store was opened keeping in mind the fast development of this part of the city with its new luxury condos and migration of the affluent. The 25,000 sq. ft. establishment cost Rs 3.5 crores to build. Spenser’s have been well-received by the people of Kolkata and this has encouraged the owners to reach out to more people in the city.

As the pioneer in organized food retailing in India, day Spencer’s Retail started operations back in the early 90s, in south India. Now it runs more than 200 stores across 35 cities in India. Currently, it offers customers two retail store formats: Convenience stores, called Spencer’s and Hypermarkets called Spencer’s Hyper. Spencer's Hyper are megastores, which combine a supermarket with a department store. At least 15,000 sq. ft. in size, Spencer’s Hyper stocks on average, 70,000 items, giving shoppers deals under one roof. In comparison Spencer's are neighborhood stores that cater to the daily and weekly top-up shopping needs of consumers. Ranging from 1,500 to 15,000 sq. ft. in size, they stock, at an assortment of food and non-food fast moving consumer foods, etc.
